Same Mission . Same Race. New Place! It’s not just a tagline; It’s our way of thinking when it comes to Kansas City’s largest 5K/1-Mile Family Fun Run (and Komen KC’s largest fundraiser of the year as well).
To save lives and end breast cancer forever!
Registration fees, sponsorship money and fundraising dollars generated from each Race for the Cure are invested back in to the Greater Kansas City service area (17 counties in both Kansas and Missouri) through partnerships with our grantee network. This past year, Komen Kansas City granted nearly $700,000 to 13 local nonprofits focused on prevention, screening, education, advocacy & treatment. We commit 75% of our net proceeds for local education and grantee support. The remaining 25% of net proceeds from each race goes to support Susan G. Komen’s National Research Program (like the recent grant funding to three researchers at the University of Kansas Cancer Center in October). Your support saves lives right here in your community.
It’s still the Race for the Cure, a celebration of those breast cancer survivors in attendance, throughout the community as well as those who are no longer with us. Our survivor pavilion is bigger than ever this year and closer to the main stage! Just wait until this year’s parade!
Kids for the Cure is back with a twist: real amusement park rides because (wait …) you are in a real amusement park! There will be a carousel ride as well as the Forde Fairlaine ride – ready and open for kids at 6A when the Expo begins. There will be Snoopy and other Peanuts character sightings all along the race route and throughout the Expo as well. And speaking of our Expo: Bigger, bolder and better! More booths than ever before as you enter the park!
Parking: Imagine having on-site directed parking for a Race that gathers nearly 18,000 participants and many more sponsors, vendors, spectators, etc. No more struggling for parking spots and walking for miles from your car to the starting line! Parking will now be easy, led by a venue and a team expert at hosting thousands of guests each and every day!
Race route: We continue to offer a certified 5K course (run it or walk it; timed or untimed) as well as our 1-Mile Family Fun course (again, run or walk; you choose). We’ll stagger start times as we know that many people cannot race all at once. Your Race registration gets you to the start line, providing you with a Race for the Cure t-shirt and racing bib as well. The race route will wind inside and outside of both Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun as well as take you behind the scenes of the area’s largest theme park. Starting lines and finish lines will be in parking lots with loads of room to accommodate the biggest 5K/1-Mile event in Kansas City!
Volunteers help remains critical and continues to be needed before, during and after Race day just as always. It still takes nearly 750 volunteers putting in almost 10,000 hours of service (or approximately more than $200,000 of salary savings) to pull off an event of this magnitude! Komen KC could not do this without our volunteers! Their support saves lives right here in our community by allowing more funds generated from race to be directed to our mission. Yes, the physical property where our Race, Expo, parking lots, first aids tents, merchandise sales, etc. will be different in 2015. We are thrilled about our partnership with Worlds of Fun and excited for the possibilities it offers us on Race Day next year. Many months of conversations, discussions, negotiations and more conversations went in to this decision. Komen KC professional and volunteer leadership feel that this move positions us best for a successful 2015 and beyond! Our new venue offers us many new opportunities for each Race participant to take advantage of including:
– Discounted Race Entry Fees (Best prices are now through 05.31.2015)
– New Race Routes (For all courses)
– On-site, Directed Parking (Within easy walking distance)
– Expanded Expo (More booths than ever)
– Additional Food Options (It’s Worlds of Fun; need we say more) the Komen KC staff seem the most excited about the funnel cakes: … just saying!
– Added Fundraising Options (Park admissions, Parking passes, Rally towels, etc.)
– EXCLUSIVE USE of the Park (10A-12P on Race Day is Komen KC time at the park)
A bit more on discounted Worlds of Fun ticket sales, as this is a new aspect of our Race promotion in 2015. As part of our partnership with Worlds of Fun, Komen KC has an inventory of discounted park passes:
Sales of both of these passes help generate added revenue for Komen KC and allow us to fund more breast cancer programming throughout our community. To be clear, your race registration allows you to enter the park and enjoy – including Race on our 5K/1-Mile courses – all Race-Day festivities. Following our Race-Day festivities, all participants will need to exit the park prior to re-admitting with your $10 Race Day or your Any Day Park Pass.
If you have purchased one of the two discounted passes you would use them for your park entry on Race Day, 09.13.2015 (Exclusive to Komen KC supporters from 10A to 12P and then open to the public until the park closes). Feel free to stay as long as you would like and enjoy one of Kansas City’s treasures! It’s that simple!
