HBO Documentary Chronicled Ricks’ Breast Cancer Journey
Kansas City, MO. Dee Dee Ricks, whose breast cancer journey was the subject of an HBO documentary, will be the featured speaker on Saturday, May 11, at the 2013 Pink Promise Brunch, hosted by Susan G. Komen® Greater Kansas City Affiliate at the Overland Park Convention Center. The local presenting sponsor of the Pink Promise Brunch is Diagnostic Imaging Centers, P.A. The sponsor and host of the Friday, May 10th VIP Event is HCA Midwest Cancer Care.
The Education of Dee Dee Ricks is the intimate story of one woman’s mission to defeat breast cancer and help others do the same. After she was diagnosed with cancer and underwent a double mastectomy, Ricks traded her hedge-fund career for philanthropy, raising money for a Harlem cancer clinic that treats underserved and uninsured patients. The film follows Ricks during a three-year period as she fought her disease and reevaluated her purpose in life.
Prior to and following the formal presentations, Pink Promise Brunch attendees are encouraged to visit Action Alley, which will include health screenings, breast cancer risk assessments and information about making healthy lifestyle choices. The brunch also features a silent auction and vendors enlisted to provide “retail therapy” to attendees. Twenty percent of all vendor sales at the event will go to the Komen Kansas City Affiliate, which has provided more than $10 million grants to local non-profit organizations to provide breast cancer education, screenings, and to meet the needs of the underserved in our community over the past 20 years.
Pink Promise Brunch Chair Lindsey Bock says the event will be the perfect blend of fun, inspiration and education. “We need everyone who attends the Pink Promise Brunch to help us share the message far and wide that early detection saves lives. If breast cancer is caught before it spreads beyond the breast, the five year survival rate is 98 percent,” said Bock.
The Legacy Promise Award will be presented to Dr. Carol Fabian, an internationally and nationally recognized breast cancer researcher of The University of Kansas Cancer Center for her major impact in the fight against breast cancer. Dr. Fabian and her research team received a Susan G. Komen Promise Grant to fund their research to determine if a plant lignin found in high concentration in flaxseed, is likely to prevent premenopausal breast cancer.
Breast cancer survivors in attendance will be honored and have the opportunity to share their stories of recovery and triumph with others who have traveled the same journey.
Registration and pre-brunch shopping will take place from 9:00-10:30 AM. The brunch and formal program will begin at 10:30AM. Shopping and “Action Alley” will resume after the formal program concludes until 2:30PM.
Early bird pricing through April 27th is $35 for individuals, or $350 for a table of 10 guests. A table host sponsorship of $1,000 includes preferred seating for 10, table signage, a listing in the event program, and four invitations to the special VIP reception on May 10.
